The Hidden Influence of the Moon
Hey Pumpkins! Have you ever looked at the moon and wondered how much of our lives it influences? If not, maybe this will start a train of thought.
The moon does more than simply define nightfall. In the environmental world, the moon has a high influence over many things. These influences can range from the tides, gravitational pull, the Earth's rotation on its axis, etc. The moon is more than just a pretty circle in the sky. Many may not know or realize that the moon has an influence over us, too.
Nights Under the Moon
On nights when the moon shines bright, we may sit outside or look out of our windows and see the beauty that it holds. However, once we climb into bed, the moon continues to affect us and our sleeping patterns. When the moon shines bright and full in the sky, we often find it harder to sleep or sleep lightly, and our sleep duration may be shorter. On the dark nights of a new moon, we tend to sleep more deeply, falling asleep faster. Our bodies have an internal clock, aligning with the light of the seasons and day vs night. The light that the moon reflects off the sun can impact this clock, affecting the quality and duration of our sleep. (Image by Anna Lee)The Moon's Affects on Our Health
Sleep is not the only thing affected by the moon. As we know, the gravitational pull of the moon has an influence on tides and water. Since the human body contains around 60% water, it only makes sense that our bodies will also be affected. Whilst our bodies do not have tidal waves, there is an effect on our blood sugar and pressure, and our metabolism.
Myth Debunking
Moods of the Moon
Yep, even more supposed influences from the moon. Our moods. For years, people have believed that crime, murder, assault, and self-unaliving cases increase under a full moon. However, after many studies, it has been shown that this is not the case. If anything, cases dip slightly, but no cement evidence can be found that there is any connection to the moon.
